We here at DemNationUSA have become increasingly frustrated over the drift, of America's public perceptions, "major media" talking points, and the social, political, and financial "conventional wisdom," towards the RADICAL Right-Wing agenda OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES.
This insidious "drift" occured almost IMMEDIATELY after the "end of the Cold War," when atrocious foreign policy decisions mirrored equally horrific domestic policies here in America. With the COLLAPSE of our "Cold War" enemies, the UNITED FRONT by both "liberals" and "conservatives" against a COMMON ENEMY collapsed. Additionally, "conservative" rhetoric and propaganda about the value of "freedom" and "democracy" started to look increasingly more HOLLOW
(as, indeed, it had at the onset of the U.S. phase of the Vietnam war, where Conservatives declared their steadfast support for "democracy" and "FREEDOM!" in Vietnam - even as they supported murderously violent SEGREGATION here in America) , especially when "Conservatives" continued to RATIONALIZE their support for the DICTATORSHIP REGIMES of our "allies" - for example, in Saudi Arabia, in South America, in Africa, etc.
For nearly half a century - for the almost 5 decades from the end of WWII in 1945 to the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991, we Americans had been telling people - broadcasting propaganda - in Eastern Europe, in Russia, in the Ukraine, and in other areas under Soviet communist domination, that "if they embraced FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY, and stood up against despotism and domination, then we Americans would help them in their fight for freedom and liberty."
But despite the "bloodless victory" of America over the "evil empire" Soviet Union, the destruction of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the "Iron Curtain," and the dissolution of the mighty Warsaw Pact armies (and their huge arsenal of city-annhiliating short- and intermediate-range nuclear weapons), when YUGOSLAVIA started to descend into the vortex of death squads, ethnic cleansing, and nationalistic self-destruction, WE AMERICANS DID NOT LIFT A FINGER to help any faction in Yugoslavia, then
Secretary of State Jame Baker's formulation to justify America's petty indifference to the REIGN OF TERROR and widening blood bath in Yugoslavia was
"WE DON'T HAVE A DOG IN THAT HUNT" - even as Serb death-squad militias sought to enforce complete Serb domination of a rump (formerly Communist) Yugoslavia, and Croat, Bosnian, Slovene, and other nationalities resisted that Serb domination with equally bloody means.

MALIGNANT NEGLECT was the typical American attitude and quasi-official policy towards AFGHANISTAN, where the
"MUJAHDEEN FREEDOM FIGHTERS" we had supported in their bloody ten-year campaign to resist the Soviet army invasion had succeeded in defeating the Red Army, leading to departure of all Russian troops in Feb. 1989 - a major humiliation for the Soviet Army, a major reason that the Soviet Politburo and Red Army tolerated Gorbachev's "Glasnost" and "Perestroika" policies that swiftly led to the dissolution of the U.S.S.R.
IF America had been so victorious over the "evil empire"... IF 5 decades of America's "Cold War" propaganda had been VINDICATED by the collapse of the Soviet Union and Warsaw pact, WHY were Americans now BEING SO NIGGARDLY and disinterested as DEATH SQUADS and MASSACRES flourished so close to our Nato allies (Italy, Austria, Greece) in the very heart of Europe; why were we so INDIFFERENT to the same massacres and warmongering in Afghanistan among our erstwhile "allies" there?
The notion that "there was NOTHING America could do" to encourage a more peaceful realignment in (or dissolution of) Yugoslavia was PROVEN A LIE, when GERMANY actively and energetically worked to support the SECESSION of SLOVENIA from the rump Yugoslavia in 1991, a NEAR BLOODLESS secession that was quickly recognized by Germany, the European Union, and the United Nations in 1992. holds that Serb Federal/Yugoslav forces bombed the airport at ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, and fired on some Sloven border posts; but most sources report very minimal casualties in this Slovenia "War of Independence" - possibly, as this article states, because Slovenia was "ethnically homogeneous" and did not have any substantial Serb minority in its population, and because it had the backing of the formidable state of Germany... and its potentially monstrous military supply industry?)
In short, GERMANY SUCCEEDED at REDUCING the extent of BLOODSHED in the self-DESTRUCTION of Yugoslavia, while AMERICA's "BEST AND BRIGHTEST" presided over a policy of MALIGNANT NEGLECT, as Yugoslavia descended into a
charnel house of death and destruction... not only rampant DEATH SQUADS, MASSACRES, wholesale ETHNIC CLEANSING, but in 1992 the Western world was shocked to see photos purporting to show DEATH CAMP conditions for Bosnian prisoners run by Serb militias in the Bosnian war zone.

there can be no doubt that the NEWLY "victorious in Cold War" American "MASTERS OF the foreign policy UNIVERSE" had done little to NOTHING to avert a HORRIBLE calamity on the very edge of modern, "civilized," co-victorious Europe in the aftermath of our "BLOODLESS VICTORY!" in the Cold War.
WHO THE HELL were the ARCHITECTS of this American FOREIGN POLICY DEBACLE, and HOW THE HELL did they arrive at their indifference to, their MURDEROUS NEGLECT OF, massacres, widespread torture, applied terrorism, and ethnic cleansing in a country just adjacent to Austria, and just a one-hour boat ride from the shores of Italy?
Looking in to, and answering this question, reveals that America's CURRENT national and ECONOMIC NIGHTMARE, and our WIDENING and INCREASINGLY COSTLY and bloody wars in Afghanistan (and Iraq, and Pakistan, and....), are no "accident," but in fact follow the pattern of MALIGNANT NEGLECT and a premeditated media bias towards that foreign policy & economic agenda.
Because, right off, at the time of America's great "We won the Cold War" "victory" over the Soviet Union, America's foreign policy agenda was effectively controlled by two groups. the "Neo-Conservatives," or "Neo-Cons" for short, and the mostly Southern Right-Wing REACTIONARIES, of whom STROM THURMOND, JESSE HELMS, Dick Cheney, and George W. Bush's Texas Republican and "oil patch" supporters were text-book examples.
THESE were THE ARCHITECTS of turning America's "Cold War victory" not only into the charnel house of Yugoslavia's destruction and Afghanistan's continuing civil-war massacres and haven for Jihad, and a similar attitude in America where "THERE WAS NOTHING WE COULD DO" to work towards democracy in other war-torn regions, for example, Africa, especially following the "Black Hawk Down" debacle of America's aborted Somalia "relief" program.
